Josh Haslett for his sharp catch in close
Tim L raising his bat for his 50 when on only 41 runs.
Teddy Bear ? Tim Lawrence raising his bat for his 50 when on only 41 runs; the team were in fact clapping him for getting a two after 11 singles in a row!
Cricket is a unique game; so many variables, so many outcomes, fantastically fun and fabulously frustrating.
This game was all of the above! After Candover cried off midweek, Bunny thankfully found a new fixture on Cricket Tinder and we had an away game in Surrey at Elstead with an A. A famous ground that Sticko drove to a few years ago as we were stepping onto the field of Elsted with an E in Sussex!
An established club with a league side. After a Saturday washout, there was trepidation that their ranks would be bolstered. EMCC had some late pull outs by players during the week. Something that has been noted by management?
So 10 men turned up to take on an unknown entity. Placed into bat onto a village green pitch, massive outfield with Egyptian Geese/Ducks wondering around.
Ian Cook and Ollie stepped out to face some young openers one of whom had had his Weetabix. Ian had forgotten his bat? alas after a few overs of play he didn?t require it anyway as his leg stump was clattered for a quacker against a fiery bowler.
The captain joined the fray but after some plays and misses was caught sharply at slip after wafting through covers. Something foreseen by our umpire and non-striker. Out for 3. Tim strode out, not looking forward to the quicks. Ollie had made some ground over the 8 overs of seam. Patient, until the mediocre spin came on and lofted a ball to square leg, frustrating. Sticko, promoted to 5 played and missed, LBW for 0. The score 40 for 4; embarrassment and an early pub beckoned.
Josh H was having none of it. Quicker running and strike rate than Tim he swash-buckled and defended his way to 44 before being bowled by their 7th bowler (all 10 of the oppo bowled). Tim was joined by Mooro who was restrained, until he wasn?t and his 6 hitting vices got the better of him after supporting Tim in his quest of scoring a fifty of singles. Dave Rees came and went with 4, Rupert H a golden quacker. Aaron held his bat proudly putting his ducks behind him and the innings had recovered to 178 for 8! A special mention to Tim who stepped in and was resilient with a face saving 60 not out off 41 overs!
A splendid tea and EMCC went out to take the win.
Rupert H bowled as well as ever and quickly took a beautiful wicket, bowled. 7 overs 1 for 17; another fine spell. Aaron was wicketless but bowled well and replaced by his senior family member, Dave also bowled nicely but again wicketless. It took us to drinks and they required 106 runs with 9 wickets in hand. Sticko came on and was not quite his usual self and leaked a few runs but did take their best batsman?s wicket by LBW. Our whole team appealed other than Sitcko as the bowler!
Tim and Ollie came on as the tail of the oppo came in. Ollie managed to take their left hander caught by Mooro; but the runs kept coming. The Captain requested the dibbly dobbly bowling and it worked! The wickets tumbled with Ollie picking up 4 for 23 and Tim 3 for 21.
Two overs to go, a win by 41 runs with 10 players and 40-4 on our board at one point.
Certainly an opposition we would like to keep going forward. A frustrating day for a few individual performances but what a team effort and the best of outcomes from the depths of a batting collapse.
