George Barnes - splendid century and cap day
George Barnes - swashbuckling six
To the Navy (Rupert Smith) for squeaky pads and some suspicious diving attempts in the field!
This week was a local derby against Clanfield. The pitch looked a picture, the sun was out and East Meon were looking to make it 2 wins in 2 years on the trot. Captain De Wob was scouting out our 2030 tour destination of Bamburgh Castle so Vc. Ollie stepped in.
Win toss bat, of course. With all the news of national security in the headlines, your author thought it wise to put our two military men of Rupert Smith and George Barnes into open for some ?team bonding?. After some comradery about the Navy boy?s squeaky pads, they set about the Clanfield attack. The score motored like a rocket with 140 up for no loss at drinks. Shortly after, our Action Man George in front a packed EMCC crowd, reached his maiden hundred. Not many chances given, thirteen 4s, one 6 and one very deserved baggy green cap, welcome to the club. It beats a beret any day of the week!
His comrade moved more like the Royal Navy?s aircraft carrier, with a few chances here and there including being bowled off a no ball full toss, but HMS Rupert made it to 50 and retired, back to the safe harbour of Jimmy?s Bar.
With the score mounting, Ian strode in to carry on the pace, 9 runs later he too retreated to the hutch. Jimmy went about the bowlers like a giddy child and was joined by Lakh who found running hard, to put it mildly. After 11 Jimmy had had enough and Lakh was run out. William, as a stand in for Wayne, took his mark and brought the tally to 240 before Jimmy retired also on 50. Ollie came in for the last over and the score ended 258 for 2.
Tea, scrumptious and gratefully consumed by players, guests and Atko offspring!
With many players not having a bat, the bowling attack was maintained with our not so little Rupert setting up his stall down the hill as usual. He twinned with Aaron, looking to make amends from last week. What a pair they made! Over one, 0-2; Over two 4-3; Over three 5-4 and by Over seven Clanfield were 15-5. The love was then shared amongst Lakh, Josh and Ollie who couldn?t make a further dent. Clanfield after a difficult start held firm and the score recovered to 76-5. William and James got the breakthroughs and the wickets tumbled. It took Josh to come back on at the tail to mop up the last batters in the penultimate over. Clanfield took it to the end, 93 All Out. Rupert H finished 8-1-10-4 bravo, Aaron 7-3-10-1, Will 5-1-10-2 and Jimmy 4-1-4-2. A nice set of figures!
Many beers consumed, inflation-linked fines given out, and jibes made about Lakh?s fingers getting rejected by airport scanners.
Onto the Next!
