Tour, tour, tour. And a new destination to boot.
At the field of dreams we did gather, at 9am Friday morning, for a tour breakfast of bacon rolls washed down with Bloody Mary and Swift One. Serenaded with tunes from this year?s virgins and then onto a rather warm van to head east. A few at the Halfway Bridge, on to Arundel for a bite to eat and then a dip in the sea at Worthing.
Our evening fixture saw us take on Chippingdale CC. A group of lithe and virile, first team, twenty somethings rather out played some tipsy, jaded and at times hot headed Meoners. One to cast away to the annals. We departed for our wonderfully centrally located, if somewhat sizzling, hostel in Brighton. Quick freshen up, and out to take on the sights and sounds that Brighton had to offer. And suffice it to say we got our fill. What a rack, what a beard, that pink dress, Elton?s tiny dancer and what a band!!! At midnight the lead singer announced ?one more song?, and we all pleaded ?one more song?. Until we realised it was just a half hour break til the next set! Finishing at 1.30 with a brilliant rendition of the Face?s ?Stay with Me?, mana to those of a certain vintage, off we ventured into the Brighton night somewhat hoarse and somewhat happy. Some tried clubbing, some tried chips or dirty kebabs on the beach, then all tried to sleep in the furnace of the hostel rooms. A funny old day that ended on a real high.
Unable to secure a Saturday fixture we instead wandered along to Hove cricket ground for a bash at the Sixes. Twas a great deal of fun and One would never have picked those that excelled (most sixes to Sole!) versus those looked like they?d never held a bat (oh Jimmy). After visiting a few watering holes, an altercation with a motorcyclist, it was back for a shower and ready to go again. Pubs, followed by some weird, open air club on the beach. Lots of talk about pudding and desert that can now be filed to ?what happens on tour??. After the trials and tribulations of the Friday the no game Saturday rather worked, a much more chilled affair.
Sunday?s game was a rather more salubrious affair. Armadillos CC at Sheffield Park National Trust. We made our way past the tourists and on through the woods to a beautiful ground. A 35 over slog, our 187 seemed pretty competitive, complete with a wonderful ton by Skip O. Atkinson. But the heat and exertion of the weekend was too much for the boys. Length was wayward, fielding loose. Armadillos raced to the total with about 15 overs to spare and a only a few down. The younger Maclay scoring his first ton, an elegant and chanceless knock. Available to watch on Youtube, some may choose not to watch back! Amazing venue, WG did Grace.
A272 all the way home. Shave, shower, deep slumber.
Another successful tour in the bag. One to repeat? Time will tell.
Onwards and upwards. Stonor game Wednesday, back to winning ways for the Meon?
