Grayswood | 4th of August 2024 (Sunday) | 13.30 | Home | Drawn |
After avoiding the biblical deluges mid-week we turned up to another hare and true pitch at the Rec. I lost the toss today and Grayswood put us into the field. A note, Grayswood were replacing Uplands who dropped out early in the week.
Rupert was back which always helps the bowling attack. We plugged away and rewarded a few wickets. Crombie assisted at the other end with some great balls but it didn?t put them off scoring. Notably the smaller opener who smothered anything threatening and carved away anything wide. After the first 10 they accumulated 60 runs for 2 wickets. Father Atkinson bowled nicely with a wicket to reward him and I replaced Rupert and too bowled tight. Our second 10 overs went for less than 30. I managed 2 wickets but still no one could get out the opener. Wickets kept falling but the opener plus the left handed managed to put on 50 towards the end. Wayne and Nick S all bowled well and Tim L and Josh on at the end never really let them get away. 198 was the score. It?s always lots to chase, would we have a chance?
Of course we would give it a go. Oli and Tim L opened, today we were facing a team of late teens and early 20s. A stark contrast in the field from us probably gave them a 30 run advantage. Their pace attack was also the fastest this season. Tim came and went quickly. I chose Nick C to bolster an end. For some reason he has never looks so assured and it was vs out and out pace. He guided the ball in all directions out the middle of the bat.
He also played a beautiful pull shot off the back foot.
Dismissed on 27 he had built a great platform with Oli for which we could launch an attack.
No Grayswood bowled loosely, there were no freebies but Oli and I went about it with good running between the wickets. The target was 6 and over with 20 overs ago. 10 overs went and we had managed to get it to 50 required off the last 10 overs. Doable at only 2 wickets down. Alas, when I had a leading edge, neither our 4 or 5, Josh or Ian made a dent gone in 2 deliveries. Mooro in at 7 was given instruction to get Oli on strike. With the tight bowling this proved tricky. What might have happened if Mooro had played like Mooro? We will never know. He departed, Father joined, only to find Oli soon after his fantastic 100 inside edged to the keeper. Wayne thought he would win it and gave it a swoosh. Bowled. Uh oh. Nick Sole next. But the Father was triggered although had been dropped the one before. Suddenly from 2 down 7 overs ago we were 9 down and looking destined for another Elsted collapse. Luckily Rup and Soleman saw us home even if the keeper did drop an edge off Rupert! And that folks is why we play timed. Man of the match was Oli but I?d like to also mention Crombie for his display. Ian got teddy for face planting the ground whilst trying to field the ball that was 5 metres away.
Roll on next week.
