Since 2016 we have been hitting the island, the format largely unchanged. 8.30am Friday Bloody Marys in the Zak, breakfast, quiz, virginal songs, minibus, ferry, Bargeman's Rest. This year twas no different.
What was different this year was the standard of EMCC cricket on the Friday and Saturday at Porchfield. In neither game did we ever look like competing. In Friday's debacle Porchfield hit 149 and we managed a paltry 111 in return. On the Saturday we just about scratched out an innings of 126 which Porchfield surpassed with ease in the 24th over. For once on tour we simply didn't show up. Special mention to a tour virgin, Mr Masters, for a golden on both the Friday and the Saturday. He and Joshy both had goldens on Saturday then left the island early (before the Porchfield innings) with lame excuses.
Fortunately Shanklin was a different affair. Always baking hot and always a fine batting track. A fine bowling and fielding display restricted them to 182, a score we surpassed in the 32nd over. Jimmy with a knock of 71, Will retired himself on 49.
Away from the cricket much frivolity was taken, we curried, we attended the huge, modern nightclub that had not a single other soul in it and on to a pub where we danced the night away surrounded by the children of the island.
Man of tour to a tour virgin, Aaron Rees.
Teddy bear could only go to Mr Masters.
The ferry home, as ever, a tranquil millpond of magnificence. Back to the Zak for Euro finals and Chilli. Would England play like EMCC against Porchfield or Shanklin, we all know the answer to that one!
The last island tour complete. Where to next year? time will tell.
