With English summer weather well and truly here, East Meon had the pleasure of a rare away game to Steep. With this being a more longstanding fixture on the calendar and past controversies and acrimony in recent memory, reconnaissance was done on the Saturday game; Steep all out for 18! Was this going to result in some very angry league players hurtling fireballs at our more aged Sunday side?
Will won the ?toss?/told them what he wanted to do and we batted first. Ollie ant Lakh started with gumption under instructions to play ?Calypso? style in a limited overs game. Boundaries aplenty, the score rose at 9 an over until Lakh was bowled for 20. The score just over 60. James, with his pad rash wounds only just recovered from last week, was skittled for a second ball quack quack, no runs destined for May?; we hope not.
This meant William took his place and with the front line bowlers off, somewhat dibbly dobbly bowling followed with eldest Atkinson only able to watch his siblings swat the ball around the ground. Ollie retired on 100* with 14x4?s and 2x6?s. Enough about me?
William continued on with Hollis and partnerships were built as William retired on 50*, Hollis out for 24, T Clay bowled for 4 before Ali and Tim L finished off our mammoth 255 off 35 overs.
200 runs have been surpassed by EMCC batsmen in every game this season, an impressive start and maybe a record? Tea was a carbohydrate rich affair and we did miss our home made delights.
With a large score on the tally and no time game format to pressure the wickets required, William spread the love with the ball. Josh bowled good lines under the watch of his parents. It worked with 3 scalps for 30.
Nick Sole, bowled generously to the batsmen. 6 overs for 36, however the latter half of his spell was delayed by a (Sticko/Mark event). Nick distracted by the fact he hadn?t been hit to the boundary walked back to his mark. Tim L under armed the ball to him and like a game of quoits, managed to hit him square on the glasses and eye. One glasses change and a sideline fag later, he was back on. This was not the only injury of the innings, with one of their batsman clipping a ball in to cow corner and managing to hit Jimmy?s child on the forehead.
Jimmy bowled an economic spell for just 5 runs from 5 but was fruitless. His first Bob for the club?
Tim L and Clay came on and the former took 2 wickets for 8, the other 1 for 22. Ali with a cheeky double wicket maiden. Even Hollis got a turn of the arm and with his wicket came an impromptu ABBA singsong on the square. After a few close calls on stumpings, Mooro mowed down the stumps on a run out to close the game off.
Steep made it to 115 all out, a decisive win for the Meoners, before they retired to the pavilion and Queens head because the Harrow was closed, luckily for Ollie?s wallet?
