Player Profile for Jeff Wheeler (Jeffwise / Persil)
An EMCC veteran of three decades, the only player to have been on every tour bus, and self-proclaimed to be the club's all-time leading run scorer; the name Jeff Wheeler is a household name in East Meon and indeed the surrounding valley (because every other club hates him).
Jeff officially captained the village for several years in the mid-00s and has unofficially captained the village ever since.
Perhaps his finest moment in recent times came up at Hawkley, where he and his Australian partner put on 236-0 in what was an enthralling innings for the remaining nine players waiting in the hutch. Less fine moments include fielding facing the wrong way and retiring “bored” during a (what was to be fair quite boring) tour match in Glastonbury.
Jeff’s dress style is somewhere between ‘authentic’ and ‘village’ (the reader can decide if the same can be said about his batting). Whilst an ever-present in the 'blazer and tie' club, and a keen neckerchief wearer, the trousers-tucked-into-socks ruins the aesthetics to a certain extent.
Over the past couple of seasons age has caught up with Wheeler junior, and he has been hampered somewhat by injury. However, there is no doubt that the batting platforms and “Gatting balls” will be back this summer.
